Together with their parents, Christopher D. Smith and Caroline D. Kirby of Conover, N.C., announce their engagement.
The bride-to-be is the daughter of Peggy Moretz of Taylorsville, N.C., and Steven Kirby of Myrtle Beach, S.C. She is the granddaughter of Morris and Hazel Tuttle. She is a 2000 graduate of Alexander Central High School and a 2004 graduate of East Carolina University with a bachelor's degree in child life.
She is a third-grade teacher at Sherrills Ford Elementary in Catawba County.

The prospective bridegroom is the son of Thornton and Vera Smith of Parkersburg. He is the grandson of Wayne and Mabel Hatcher of Ripley and the late Thornton Sr. and Dollie Davis Smith. He is a 1996 graduate of Parkersburg South High School and a 2001 graduate of the University of Charleston with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. He graduated from Appalachian State University in 2006 with a master's in instructional technology and educational media. He is employed by Catawba County Schools as an instructional technology specialist.
A Oct. 8 wedding is planned at the Courtyard of Little Acres near Marion, N.C., followed by a honeymoon in St. Lucia.
