Winds down trees, power lines

PARKERSBURG - An afternoon storm downed trees and power lines in Wood County Tuesday.

The Wood County 911 Center reported receiving about 20 weather-related calls during the early afternoon, most involving downed trees on roads or lines.

The most serious call involved a power line down in the 1300 block of Lost Pavement Road in south Parkersburg. The road was closed for a couple of hours until crews could remove and repair the line, officials said.

Cars kick up water from rains that hit the Parkersburg area Tuesday.

Other area counties reported mainly downed trees, although Jackson County also reported downed power lines.

The National Weather Service in Charleston issued a severe thunderstorm warning about 1 p.m. Tuesday for several area counties, with the storm moving south through the area in under an hour.

The storm carried heavy rain, strong winds and hail in some areas.

MonPower officials reported more than 200 people were without electricity Tuesday afternoon in Wirt County, primarily in the Creston area. Wood County had about 450 outages, primarily in and around Parkersburg with about 75 in Davisville.

Other power outages reported Tuesday afternoon included 167 in Calhoun County, 235 in Pleasants County (primarily in St. Marys), 195 in Jackson County (primarily in Ravenswood and Sandyville), 926 in Ritchie County (primarily in Harrisville, Petroleum and Smithville) and 359 in Roane County (primarily Gandeeville, Looneyville and Tariff.)

In Ohio, AEP Ohio reported 1,218 outages Tuesday afternoon in Washington County and 2,409 in Athens County.

All outages were expected to be repaired by early Tuesday evening.

Today's forecast from the weather service calls for sunny skies with a high near 95 and calm winds, becoming mostly clear with a low around 67 degrees tonight.

A chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Thursday, mainly after noon with partly sunny conditions and a high near 91 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 30 percent, rising to 40 percent Thursday night and 50 percent Friday.

The chance of precipitation will remain about 40 percent through the weekend until sunny conditions return next Monday and Tuesday.
