PARKERSBURG - Some intense rivalries surrounded by an array of games with playoff implications. Welcome to Week 11 of the West Virginia high school football season.

"The Battle for the Hatchet" game takes place in Ripley Friday night with more than just bragging rights at stake.

Ravenswood (8-1) is not only looking for its first series win since 2006 but also trying to make the jump into the top four of the WVSSAC rankings and secure home field for the first two rounds of the playoffs. Currently, the Red Devils are tied with Frankfort at No. 5.

On the opposite sidelines is a 7-2 Ripley squad which is ranked ninth in Class AAA. Whether they win or lose, the Vikings in all likelihood won't play host to a first-round game next week.

Parkersburg Catholic (7-2) will play a rare Friday night home game at Stadium Field and will play host to Williamstown (7-2). The fifth-ranked Yellowjackets are also trying to earn a top four seed.

Area teams sitting on the fence, include Parkersburg South, Roane County and Calhoun County. Since losing its first three games, South has responded with a six-game winning streak. The 15th-ranked Patriots travel to John Marshall (2-7). A loss could jeopardize a top 16 finish, while a victory could bump them up as high as 11th.

The 16th-ranked Raiders (5-4) from Roane County figure if they win, they are in. Their first order of business is playing at Ritchie County (2-7).

"I have a lot of respect for their quarterback Andy Lipscomb," Roane County coach Tom Hardman said. "He is surrounded by good athletes. Obviously they have struggled, but I don't know why because they have the personnel."

Calhoun County's fate rests on its ability to defeat St. Marys (2-7) at home and get help from several others. The 5-4 Red Devils are tied with Matewan for the 15th position.

"We just need to play St. Marys and not worry what is happening during or after with other games," Calhoun County coach Doyle Hupp said. "If nothing else, for these seniors, going out 6-4 sounds a whole lot better than 5-5."

Magnolia, meanwhile, is trying to give coach Mark Batton his first perfect regular season since he took over 11 years ago. The second-ranked Blue Eagles (9-0) travel to Grafton (4-5) - the same school they lost to in last year's Class AA state finals.

Completing the schedule for the Mid-Ohio Valley on the West Virginia side of the river: Bishop Donahue (6-3) travels to Doddridge County (3-6); Richwood (9-0) entertains Gilmer County (3-6); Weir (1-8) tangles at Tyler Consolidated (4-5); and Wirt County (7-2) plays at South Harrison (6-3).

One area team in Ohio advanced to postseason. Caldwell (8-2) goes to Fredericktown (10-0) to meet the Freddies who are the top seed in Ohio Division V, Region 19.
