’Jackets fall on last-minute FG, 23-21
From Staff ReportsPOINT PLEASANT - Point Pleasant placekicker Brock McClung made up for missing two field goals and an extra point by kicking a 22-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the Black Knights past Williamstown 23-21 on Friday night.
The Class AA 16th-ranked Black Knights were shutout in the second half until McClung's winning boot.
Class A third-ranked Williamstown, which fell to 6-2, fumbled the ensuing kickoff return and Point Pleasant ran out the final seconds.
After falling behind 20-14 at halftime, Williamstown took its first and only lead when Joe Palm carried the ball into the end zone from 3 yards out at the 8:17 mark of the fourth quarter.
Point Pleasant began its game-winning drive at its own 35-yard line with 4:52 remaining in regulation. The Black Knights converted two third down conversions and moved the ball down to the Yellowjacket 5 to help set up McClung's field goal.
Point Pleasant scored on its first three possessions of the first half and built a 20-14 lead.
Following a 67-yard kickoff return from Nathan Roberts to open the game, Point Point Pleasant needed just six plays to find the end zone.
On third-and-4 from the Williamstown 5-yard line, Black Knights quarterback Eric Roberts found Derek Pinson coming out of the backfield for a touchdown reception. The kick missed on the point after and Point Pleasant led 6-0 at the 9:33 mark of the first quarter.
After Donovan Powell picked off Williamstown quarterback Adam Kerns, Point Pleasant took just one play to score again.
This time it was running back Nathan Roberts finding a hole up the middle and racing 63 yards for paydirt. The extra point put the Black Knights in front 13-0 with 7:13 still remaining before the second quarter.
Williamstown answered on its next series. On two separate occasions, Kerns hooked up with wide receiver Lane Knost - once for a 20-yard catch on third-and-7 from the Yellowjacket 33 and again for a touchdown on fourth-and-7 from the Point Pleasant 29.
The point after cut the deficit to 13-7 with three minutes still showing in the period.
Two crucial penalties - a roughing the punter on fourth-and-24 from the Black Knights' 16 and a pass interference call on third-and-15 from the Yellowjackets' 15- kept Point Pleasant's next drive alive and the Black Knights covered 70 yards in 18 plays to increase the margin to 20-7 when Nathan Roberts ran it in from a yard out.
Williamstown's defense buckled down on Point Pleasant's next offensive set and held the Black Knights to a three-and-out.
The Yellowjackets took over from their own 15 and marched 85 yards in six plays. Kerns' 40-yard completion to Tyler George helped set up Palm's 7-yard touchdown run at the 2:42 mark of the second quarter.
