Defense keys Williamstown’s 26-7 victory
By KERRY PATRICK, kpatrick@newsandsentinel.comMASON - Williamstown left Wahama's bunch formation in a quandary and defeated the previously unbeaten White Falcons 26-7 on Friday night.
Wahama's offense manufactured a paltry 109 yards, including just 3 yards through the air. Williamstown allowed just six first downs and forced the White Falcons to punt eight times.
Minus one special teams letdown that allowed Wahama (6-1) to score its only touchdown on a late second-quarter kickoff return, Williamstown (6-1) was superb in keeping the White Falcons out of the end zone.
Linebacker Matt Hendrickson put the exclamation mark on the victory when he tackled Wahama quarterback William Zuspan in the end zone for a third-quarter safety.
"You can't say enough about our defense," Williamstown coach Terry Smith said. "Besides them taking the kickoff return to the house, we shut them down pretty good."
On its second offensive series of the game, Williamstown drove the ball 58 yards in five plays and scored the game's first touchdown when quarterback Adam Kerns hooked up with Cole Pickrell for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Kerns rolled to his right and lofted the pass downfield. Wahama defensive back Clay VanMeter appeared to have the interception but mistimed his leap and the ball floated into Pickrell's grasp as he fell into the end zone.
Joe Palm's first of three successful extra point attempts put the Yellowjackets in front 7-0 with 2:45 remaining in the first quarter.
Williamstown answered again late in the second quarter thanks to a seven-play drive which resulted in a 23-yard field goal by Palm. Wahama's Ryan Lee then hauled in the kickoff and scampered 90 yards for a touchdown.
Tyler Kitchen added the point after with just 45 seconds left before intermission.
Wahama punted on its first two possessions of the second half and Williamstown broke through again when Hendrickson found the end zone on a 7-yard carry. Another Palm PAT and the Yellowjackets led 17-7 at the 4:09 mark of the third quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Hendrickson's boot was bobbled by both Lee and Micaiah Branch before Branch recovered the loose ball at the Wahama 2. On second-and-8 from the 4, Zuspan sprinted right on the option then reversed his direction and Hendrickson tripped him up for a safety.
Williamstown tacked on an insurance touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter when Lane Knost reached high for a Kerns pass and raced 35 yards for the score.
"This win was real important for playoff points - we want to host games in the playoffs," Smith said.
