If the past two days were any indication, Parkersburg Catholic golfer Jacob Hensler opened more than a few eyes along the college trail with his state championship performance.

During Wednesday's final round of the West Virginia high school state tournament held at Speidel Golf Course in Wheeling, Hensler practically lapped the Class A field and claimed medalist honors by a 17-stroke margin. His 3-over-par 74 matched Tuesday's effort and solidified his fourth straight all-state finish.

Hensler, who became the first individual champion at PCHS since Chris Barlament accomplished the feat four years ago as part of the Crusaders' team title, is still undecided about his future plans. Wherever he lands, he knows golf will be part of the picture.

"I just want to play Division I somewhere - I know I'm good enough, so we will see what happens," Hensler said. "Hopefully, this helps out a little bit."

Hensler's 148 total came within one stroke of matching the best output by an individual golfer. Hurricane teammates Brian Anania and Aaron Barna both shot 147 in Class AAA as the Redskins claimed the team title for a third straight year.

"I tried to keep pace with them, but I lost by one stroke - I'll take that," Hensler said. "

Hensler's round included three birdies. He also eagled No. 3 when his approach shot from 160 yards found the bottom of the cup.

"I think his mom screamed when it went in," said PCHS coach Bill Pugh, who was tracking scores for a group on another part of the course. "She was surprised I didn't hear her when it happened."

Also in Class A, first-round leader Williamstown fell to third place in the final standings with a 526. Charleston Catholic jumped three spots to claim first place with a 512, while Madonna was runner-up at 517.

Representing the Yellowjackets were all-stater Jordan Pomrenke (79-90-169), Robby Fenton (81-90-171), Amanda Marchetti (95-91-186) and Logan Flanagan (96-93-189).

"It's very disappointing because in my heart I feel talent-wise we have the best golfers in the state," Williamstown coach Russ Schramm said. "Wins and losses, we had a very successful year. We just didn't get the goal that we wanted or felt we could get."

Competing as individuals were Gilmer County all-stater Ryan Hough (83-86-169) and teammate Cody James (86-89-175), along with St. Marys' Adam Straight (85-86-171).

In Class AA, defending champ Ritchie County lost to Grafton by one stroke (511-512). Earning all-state honors for the Rebels were Matt Metz (84-85-169) and Jordan Shaffer (87-82-169). Rounding out the lineup on Day 2 were Josh Metz (88-86-174) and Dan Jones (90).

"The kids are pretty upset," Ritchie County coach Ted VanScoy. "Since I took over, we've had a good five-year run. We've finished fourth twice, runner-up twice and first once. The bar is set pretty high."

Ravenswood's Torrey Wolfe (82-80-162) put together a strong run and placed third overall. Wyoming East's Evan Muscari (73-79-152) produced a six-stroke margin of victory over Grafton's Adam Ware (82-76-158). Magnolia's Josh Yost (101-104-205) also participated.

In Class AAA, Parkersburg senior Ollie Fankhauser (80-83-163) suffered through a rough patch towards the tail end of his round.

"Ollie wasn't playing that badly," PHS coach Don Snider said. "He was 4-over then he double-bogeyed No. 8. Even with three holes to go he was only 6-over, so he had a legitimate shot right where he was to be all-state. He has nothing to be ashamed of."

Also representing the Mid-Ohio Valley, Parkersburg South sophomore Austin Root shot rounds of 82 and 91 for a 173.
