PARKERSBURG - Parkersburg South, Ravenswood and Williamstown have earned No. 1 seedings for the upcoming girls basketball sectional tournaments.
The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission released on Monday the seedings and pairings for the sectional and regional tournaments that will determine the eight teams in each class that qualify for the state tournament.
In Region 3, Section 1 of Class AAA, Parkersburg South is the No. 1 seed and will meet the winner of No. 4 Capital and No. 5 George Washington on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center. Meanwhile, No. 3 seed Parkersburg High School will play at No. 2 seed Ripley that same night. The two winners then will meet on Friday, Feb. 27 at the home of the highest seeded team in order to determine their positioning for the regional tournament.
The other sectional that feeds into Region 3 has No. 1 seed Princetion meeting the winner of No. 4 Nicholas County and No. 5 Riverside while No. 3 seed Woodrow Wilson will travel to No. 2 Greenbrier East.
The two sectional winners will meet the runner-ups from the other section to determine who will advance to the state tournament. Regional games are set for March 3 at the home of the sectional champions.
In Region 1, Section 2 of Class AA, Ravenswood is the top seed and will host No. 4 Ritchie County on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Meanwhile, No. 3 seed Point Pleasant will travel to No. 2 Roane County that same night. The two winners will meet on Thursday, Feb. 26 to decide their positioning for the regional.
The other section will witness No. 4 Tyler Consolidated visit No. 1 Oak Glen while No. 3 Weir travels to No. 2 Magnolia.
Regional games will be played on March 4.
Little Kanawha Conference champion Braxton County is the No. 2 seed (behind top-seeded Lincoln) in Class AA, Region 2, Section 2. Braxton will meet the winner of No. 6 Philip Barbour and No. 3 Webster County on Feb. 25.
In Class Region 1, Section 1, Williamstown is the top seed and earned an opening round bye. The Yellowjackets will await the winner of this Saturday's noon sectional game pitting No. 5 Wirt County at No. 4 Gilmer County. The winner of that game will travel to Williamstown on Tuesday, Feb. 24, for a sectional semifinal contest.
Meanwhile, two other sectional games will take place at noon on Saturday. No. 6 seed Calhoun County will travel to No. 3 Parkersburg Catholic and No. 7 Paden City will travel to No. 2 St. Marys. The winners of those two games will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 24 in the other sectional semifinal.
Looking ahead to the regional, the other section has No. 1 seed Bishop Donahue meeting the winner of No. 5 Madonna at No. 4 Valley Wetzel and No. 2 seed Wheeling Central meeting the winner of No. 6 Hundred at No. 3 Cameron.
Doddridge County is the No. 3 seed in Class A Region 2, Section 1. The Bulldogs will entertain No. 6 South Harrison on Saturday. The winner of that game will travel to Tygarts Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 24, for a sectional semifinal game. The top seed is No. 1 Clay-Battelle.
This marks the first time the coaches participating in a regional have seeded the sectional and regional tournaments. Under the new format, teams that lose in the sectional championship game advance to the regional and still qualify for the state tournament.
