Wood County’s second largest community, Vienna is also one of the fastest growing in West Virginia.
Situated just north of Parkersburg, Vienna is primarily a residential community. Most jobs in the town are in the retail and dining sectors.
Grand Central Mall, the area’s largest retail center, is located at the southern end of Vienna. The area near the mall is crowded with restaurants and other large retail outlets, including Kmart, Wal-Mart and Sam's Club.
Vienna can trace its roots to 1794, when Dr. Joseph Spencer settled near what is now 28th Street and River Road. To pay off a debt, Spencer divided 100 acres into what became the central area of the community. Spencer named the new town after his hometown of Vienna, Va.
Form of government
The city of Vienna has a mayor and five council people. They all serve concurrent four-year terms.
The city has a a full-time police department and a volunteer fire department. The city also operates its own water department and its own sewage treatment plant.
