The Wyndemere model for every street?

August 18, 2013

There’s been a great deal of public discussion on the Wyndemere area wanting the city to help pay for street improvements in what was constructed by a private contractor who didn’t build the streets......

As the Editor correctly points out, it will now be legal to create a dead-end on the street in front of your house, with no prior approval of any city/county/state/federal agency.

Guess what? My temporary gate goes up tomorrow morning, to be replaced by a permanent gate in about three weeks, once the parts are received. Now that there's a legal precedent for private individuals to create their own dead-end streets on "public" roads, there's NOTHING anyone can do about MY gate!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

denver it was said by Parkersburg city attorney Joe Santer in July 24, 2013 paper" Forget the gate. Forget 12th Street, "Santer said. "They are asking the city to take the streets. Either way, the gate stays. It is not a gate issue. Santer said as long as one end of the street meets the definition of public access. That would give you restricted access. It does not eliminate access, "he said."You are not going to decide whether there is a gate or not. It is their gate."

" it was said that the gate didn't belong to the city but the resident's of Wyndemere." Who said that "Itsnottolate"

One of the problems is that it is not a dead end street, its only a dead end street for everyone not living there, as far as we know. That is why, if they stay in the city of parkersburg and we fix the streets, that we should guarantee that no one can use that gate. The person who said it is not a "gate issue" could not be more wrong. A simple block wall to stop any potential use of the gate would be sufficient. The other problem people have with this development is that it seems these people hold themselves to be better and want seclusion and privacy yet they want "public assistance" to fix their road. The statement, I want a gate at the end of my road was made simply because it was said that the gate didn't belong to the city but the resident's of Wyndemere.

What about all the dead end streets in Parkersburg? Are you going to have a parade or a half marathon on them? And I to would like to see what the agreement was about the gate when it was "annexed in 1999." I have a feeling there wasn't any.

@ Hannah & Belmont both excellent ideas! Especially the one about the race and getting to work, that's always fun.

I think they should run the half marathon up and down that road. Then the runners would stay out of the way of people who have to actually work for a living.

Why not route a big parade through this street?

I forgot to mention the weekend the people of Wyndemere were at both entrances to stop people from cutting through, now that seems like it would be against the law since it was a public road since 1999

I do agree with you denver, the gate was there, BUT it has not been shut till just recently, I think if the streets are public the gate should remain open for all tax payers to enjoy the streets we all pay for!!!! If I remember at 1 time a Judge ordered the gate remain open for the nursing home to have access, I wonder how they got around that? Maybe Vienna will put a wall up on the other side of the gate, so the public won't ruin 12th street by driving through

All this should have been taken care of before Wyndemere, was annexed into the City of Parkersburg, in 1999, and since it wasn't, its now left up to the people in office, NOW, to take care of. Talk about passing the buck! Do I think its right Wyndemere has a gate at the Vienna end? No! I don't think its right! But! It was annexed with the gate.

That is one way the rich get rich. Ever notice movie stars and the "famous" are constantly not made to pay - surely their celebrity would bring more business - so they think. In effect the one's who can afford to pay - don't always. The ones who can't pay always have to. To me this is a case of having their cake and eating it too. The old we are better than you - we don't want to associate with "Parkersburg" - we just want you to pay our way. I guess once you have so much more than others you start to feel entitled and lose their sense of what is ethical or the right thing to do.

Second off, they don't own the street, and did is probably the key part of your sentence. Third, i would say the person was pointing out the hypocrisy in their wanting the city to fix their roads which should have already been fixed. They wanted it to be a gated community so they could keep people out and have the convenience of going either way just for themselves. I say if they want to keep the gate, just build a wall in front of it out of block to block their precious view and keep them from using the gate too. That sounds like a fair compromise for people who wanted to keep everyone out and only wanted to join the city to get their roads fixed and maintained by the city. The cost of those houses divided by how much it would cost to fix road and maintain electronic security gates would be very little for people of their means, so that leads me to believe they are cheapskates.

First off! You don't own the street you and your neighbors live on, like the people in Wyndemere did before it was it was annexed by the City of Parkersburg in 1999. So how can you put a gate across a street or road you don't own? And the gate at the Vienna end was there when it was annexed.
