@AaronL, in reference to IFHEPD: should have called me

Why should I have called you? Do you mow yards for a reasonable price? Or do you just want to argue with me? Maybe next time, I will.

All of those businesses that Newell is given undeserved credit for and he still needs a User Fee?

@groggyfake: 1) Yeah, the mayor keeps costs to a minimum for necessary things, then wastes it elsewhere. 2) I don't expect the mayor to hire the same people I call to mow, so that sentence doesn't even make sense. 3) 50 bucks for less than 1 hour of work is too much, considering it is mowing grass, especially when the homeowner is on a limited income. I'm not talking about mowing a lot as big as city park; 4) Screw your idea of moving to an apartment~~THIS IS OUR HOME.

Question: Is it hard to breathe with your head so far up the mayor's rectal vault?

Froggylake where are the big business the ones tat employee 30 or more and pays better than minimum wage the reason the mayor won 3 terms is called payoffs.

Froggylake. Most of the busineses you just named are minimum wage jobs. A hotel where guests look at a cementary? What a waste. The cvs is not a new business. It just moved from one location to another.

You named not one major business. Strangley you supported Fatman's point. There has been no new major buinesses

Froggylake I've lived in parkersburg all my life it's people like you who gets on here and post things that they know nothing about .Its not my fault we have a mayor and council who runs city into ground. At least I can say I didn't vote for any of them why do you think no major business will come to parkersburg. The mayor and council should be working for free for the poor job they are doing.

Groggylake I like how you get on here and run your mouth when you don't know what you are talking about. My name is not Rick everybody thinks I am .I know Rick because he was a policeman when I was little and I lived close to him.i guess that's the reason you take up for Newell neither one of you know what you are talking about glad we will be getting new mayor in about 3 years maybe parkersburg will become a decent town .

It's the job of the city to keep grass mowed, etc. Newell is too cheap to hire extra labor-enough of it-to keep the city cleaned up. He hires a few extras in the summer, then in the fall, delights in firing them.

Also, it is damm near impossible to get someone to mow a yard. We FINALLY found someone to mow and weedeat about every week. If you DO find someone, they ask way too much. One guy wanted 50 bucks for a very small yard.

Just because you are a homeowner, does not mean you will always be able to take care of your property. Illness and age happen.

Parkersburg has a lack of pride in itself. Between run down houses and private lots with weeds so high you could grow real WEED and the cops would never find it. It is shameful for how shabby the city looks.

From walking in the parks, I don't think very many employees know how to run a mower.

Trying to keep up with overgrown weeds on city and private lots "is a monumental task?"

County officials have said the ending balance for the fiscal year could end up over $1 million.

Hire a temporary crew as there are many people who have their own equipment and do this work for a living.

I don't think they fine them as much as they just send them a bill for the mowing. But much like the B&O it is hardly ever collected.

You commentors are whining as much as this article!! There should be enough people, hard up for part time work, to hire by the city and take care of the weeds!! It's better than the alternative. What if there were no rain and nothing would grow?

If you wanted to tell property owners to take care of their overgrown weeds you should've assessed a fine to get the point accross, not written this whiney article.

The city planted weeds on my lot, so they shouldn't complain too much.
