Well, sorry, I have trouble buying it. What if they took a bad shot and only wounded the bear, then they would've had a po'd bear tearing around.

If it was ok to take a shot at the bear with people walking around, it should've been ok to hit it with a dart. Come on, we've already seen it done a hundred times on tv in residential areas all over the US. I've seen bears drop out of trees, dead asleep, and hit the ground, carried away and released, groggy but alive. They don't charge and run rampant for ten minutes before the drug takes effect.

Why is the DNR carrying tranquilizers if they won't use them in the very situation that calls for them?

Shame on the people in the neighborhood for becoming scapegoats. And shame for not going indoors when told.

The article says the DNR has darts. Where were they? Seems like the DNR has some answering to do in this situation. By the way are they also saying the local police force is unable to lock down our city and get people off the streets? Perhaps they should learn how Boston did it? Locked down a much larger city.

Now that I have all the facts on this issue - I would have to say those brainless people of Parkersburg who were out getting in the way are to blame for the death of this bear. If you have never seen a bear before I encourage you to get out of Parkersburg more often. There are plenty of bear for your viewing pleasure if you just get in the car and head east into the mountains of this beautiful state. I am amazed at how people have to run to see what is going on everytime something happens. A bear "eating" you would have been very fitting for the occasion.

Wow!!! A big lesson to be learned here! If I'm not mistaken...I believe the bear was just passing through. They tend to journey off into parts unknown after their long winter slumber I don't think he was showing any aggression or had any visible health problems. I'm sure his goal was to get out of town as fast as his legs would carry him! The DNR should have some knowledge on the behavior of bears and migration... or at least I would hope so. It scares and angers me to think he used a bullet instead of a tranquilizer to put the bear down! Not a smart move with all of the onlookers!!! Speaking of the onlookers...where were the police? Ever here or practice crowd control? That is something that should be addressed in future. The bear's death was senseless and the law enforcement(DNR) used a knee-jerk method to handle the situation....Barney with his one bullet....and the police more interested with the bear instead of crowd control....needs work boys.

Idiotic and absent parents allowing their kids to roam around looking for the bear. Parents like this are too stupid to have kids.

What a bunch of malarkey. The DNR officer should have tranquilized the bear in the first place, then they wouldn't have been "herding" it as they seem to imply. No reason for the bear to be shot, and I'm an avid hunter.

I still think this could have ended better - for the bear. Why did the police at least threaten to arrest those disobeying orders to go inside. Lets see bear running loose, if I were to watch, it would be from a window INSIDE. Its a bear, leave it alone.

Sad to have to kill the bear because of idiots with flashlights trying to see it. We call ourselves the smartest species on the planet, but this proves that a lot of us are stupid and can't follow directions.

The P-Burg police used extraordinary restraint by NOT shooting this Bear at an EARLIER time than they did. This wild DANGEROUS animal roamed the streets in HIGHLY POPULATED NEIGHBORHOODS of this city for 45 minutes. This was not a deer, dog, cat, etc. These type of WILD ANIMALS are extremely unpredictable. There was hundreds of {MORONS} people on the streets, following this BEAR thru the neighborhoods. You can be critical of the police and DNR, but I would challenge YOU, to shoot this BEAR in the ASS with a dart that will take up to 10 minutes to take it's effect....

Should the people have been out there? No. Did it make it harder for law enforcement? Yes. Should the police have done their job by ordering people away so they could avoid killing the bear? Absolutely. This bear was not charging at innocent bystanders. There was time to get control of the situation. There should have been officers making a perimeter so people could not get in the way. Period.

The police(these were nervous nellies) are not qualified by lack of knowledge of wildlife behavior(unless it is two legged drug addicted or street urchin activity) to say a bear had to be killed. I would rather have seen the idiots and picture taking pieces of*****harmed.( and from the slew of comments made over this grossly negligent happening, most would agree with me). I know there would not have been such a public outcry had these 2 legged aggressive street people and other urchins been harmed in any way as has evoked this outrage over the killing of an innocent bear by gung ho, but nervous nellie enforcement officers.

You just made my point: ""THE PEOPLE on the street"" The police have a DUTY to protect even these morons. I listened to the events as they unfolded on my scanner. The police DID wait until the bear had entered a less populated area {like Jackson park}, before shooting. ALL OF YOU, are ignoring the fact that this was a potentially DANGEROUS ANIMAL.....

The low life humans on the street were indeed more dangerous!! That is a fact that cannot be disputed. Protectors of the threatening and rabid crowd will try but fail to offer any facts that the bear was a danger to the maddening crowd.
