WVU fans must walk the walk

April 24, 2013

Fans of West Virginia University football like to believe they ‘talk-the-talk’, but when it came to Saturday’s Gold/Blue Scrimmage, they failed to ‘walk-the-walk’ as barely 8,000 showed up for the......

The last time I was at a WVU game I was subjected to a drunken fan who shouted obscenities at the players while holding up both hands with the middle finger extended. No, wait a minute, that was the coach...

Lots of good comments here. I, for one, did not even know that it was time for the spring game, nor what time it was, nor that it was on TV. Admittedly, I don't read the local news much, so I know that it's my fault.

As far as WVU fans being fair-weather, that's pretty much true. My personal opinion is that you can only wait so long for a national championship before you give up and realize that it won't ever happen. At some point over the last 10 years, I came to that realization.

Remington...We are in Africa this time, we were in A-stan the last time. My user name can be misleading. I was in the Corps but now a National Guard guy out of Williamstown.

"Are we not as good or better than Virginia Tech?"

Well...since you were 3-9 (last 12 yrs) and 0-2 (last 2 yrs) against them - I'd say you're not!

wvu fans are so fair-weathered that the past couple of years haven't you had home games that didn't even sell out in that mid-size stadium?!

They clearly don't teach geography and demographics at WVU either considering there's a little town of over 300,000 called Pittsburgh just north of the hole. There are so many WVU alums that live in that region that could've easily made the trip south. Morgantown has 30,000 alone, and add in Wheeling, Parkerburg and Fairmont and you have just as many people that could've made the trip as if you were to add in Lynchburg to the equation at VT based on the driving times. So really you had no excuse having only 8,000 at your spring game. Then again, what do I know about getting demographic numbers and reading a map, I went to Marshall.

If there are WVU fans within a reasonable driving distance that didn't attend the spring game then they should be ashamed of themselves but Blacksburg is 45 mintues from Roanoke.. an in-state town with a population greather than 300,000. That town alone represents around a fifth of the population of the entire state of WV. They really need to start teaching geography and demographics at Marshall.

Blacksburg VA is also in BFE. Virginia Tech is coming off a 7-6 season. They turned out 30,000 for the spring game.

Are we not as good or better than Virginia Tech?

There are NO excuses. The turnout for West Virginia's spring game was pathetic. That's all there is to it.

It isn't very honest to compare attendance at an Alabama or Auburn game.. both of which are fairly close together and within 90 minutes of several large population centers.. to a WVU game situated in BFE. I would love to see more attendance at the games but until Fairmont explodes in population or the school is moved a few hours south on 79 then it isn't going to happen. It would be more telling to know how far the average fan drives to see these games.

Good article! One thing I have noticed is that there are way too many "fair weather" fans supporting WVU.I think some of that is attributed to the success the team has had over the recent years and have unrealistic expectations. I wouldve loved to have went to the game but Im currently deployed. But we will still be getting our season tickets.
