I work in high school sports now and can tell you after going through the Wood County system that the biggest problem with all of the facilities in the area is that there is no foresight into what it takes to maintain the facilities.

Band aids are constantly applied until things become so bad that the schools are forced to replace or make major repairs. If the collective heads at each school would think ahead a majority of these things could be avoided.

If it's such a huge issue, than just build one major complex that can easily be managed and build it somewhere central and somewhere that has space for parking and other necessities. That would provide the quality site that for years has handicapped Parkersburg from getting the state football championships and would save the BOE some money from having to spend a large amount of money for repairs.

I said the last time I logged onto this news site some time ago. Stadium Field needs to be bulldozed and rebuilt. Band aids are all that's being applied now. It obviously can't be a grand rebuild at the beginning but over time could feasibly be done and provide to be a nice facility. And it does baffle the mind why it was allowed to get into this condition in the first place. As far as Erickson field, I know it has been a struggle all along with the efforts there and while some may question the direction, you can't question the determination. I had to move away in 2005. Looking at this situation now between the two projects and the students affected, the comments on this board confound me. So much for community pride. And that should be the WHOLE community. North- ender. South- sider. Who cares. Grow up and work toward both goals with funding for both schools. Or better yet, have a crash-up derby each year pitting north vs. south and take the funds and build a county stadium.

Here is a thought, maybe the BOE should focus on the education of the students in the school system. We left Parkersburg several years ago and our children, who were straight A students, were a year and a half behind in the school system we moved to. The schools are in need of repairs, our PTA had to purchase computers and other technology for our teachers, and the PTA also purchased security cameras to help with the safety of the students at the school our children attended. These things should be the priority of the BOE - NOT crumbling stadiums, that is what sports boosters are for. If there is so much PHS pride out there, why did they let their precious stadium fall into ruin to begin with?? As for Erickson being "subpar", I don't believe that is the case at all. I do believe that a lot of people have dedicated a lot of time and money to make that project a reality.

I have lived in Parkersburg my whole life and was born and lived on the north side and went to PHS. I also have relatives who lived their whole lives on southside. And I can tell you from that experience that all I ever heard from most of my relatives across the river was crying about poor southside. That is why every other year at Stadium Field we had to let the crybaby southsiders be the home team on our home field because all the crybaby tears from southside would have flooded the river and drowned them all. Poor southside, blah, blah, blah 45 years and it never stops. If Rick Bush loves southside so much why doesn't he move his law office over there?

@Matt4685 that pretty impressive and mature, insulting my initials into something sexual that and then proceeding to insult my IQ. I hold 2 college degrees from an accredited University. Something tells me that my IQ is not lacking as you are trying to perpetuate

I find it hilarious how a lot of the posters here are attempting to perpetuate the north/south rivalry. This was simply about a stadium needing funds and the controversy of how they received them. Erickson has received some funds from the BOE but nowhere near the amount given Tuesday night.

I do believe however that the BOE should appoint a special monitor to oversee the funds so they are not used for anything else besides the corrections absolutely necessary. The taxpayers deserve the knowledge that their money is spent wisely.

Erickson has done a tremendous job to erect what will be a magnificent facility once it is finished. I don't necessarily agree with way they are going about it but they do have a goal. Instead of tunnels, that money could have paid for turf and a new track. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Remember, most of you have never seen the stadium at PHS other than what it is now overall and it had to start somewhere.

We had the same problem in Jackson County. The BOE paid the balance ($600,000)for Ripley's artificial turf field when the "Summer Bash " ticket sales failed, but when Ravenswood asked the BOE to finish paying ($30,000) for the "Facililty Building" they were told no. It took 30 years to get new restrooms for the Ravenswood football field too.

The WVSSAC agrees that Erikson is generally unusable especially when playoff time comes for any sport. That is why they have moved games from there on numerous occasions. As for the comment aobut the uniforms getting dirty, the VAST MAJORITY of fields in the State and around the country at the high school, college and even professional levels are turf. So your saying that the majority of people are "too good" to play on a real field?

jbsnowboarder....I'm going to take a guess and say PHS won't play on a "sub-par" field because the PARENTS and STAFF think they are too good to do so. Or is it they don't want those uinforms dirtied up by playing on a real field.

Erickson is raising money to put in turf, remeber BOE will not had out money to us "Southsiders". jbsnowboarder, why do you feel the need to bash our stadium? Can you play a game on yours right now? Hate us all you want, we will enjoy kicking your butts next year and for years to come in our "flood" stadium.

@Whitney Why should PHS have to play at a sub-par facility that is not even finished? A facility that is plagued by with problems such as overuse and drainage problems?

When you build a natural grass football complex in a flood plain you are going to have issues. Every time that the river floods good, or even after rain and use, Erikson become completely unusable. Will these same people then be demanding money to fix the field? You reap what you sow people

WestByGod..it wasn't "fine" all those years..it was the only option South had. Why couldn't PHS play their games at Erickson until the money could be raised? That was never an option during all of this.

Here's the difference between South and PHS: South fans know how it is to do without but have supported their teams through thick and thin since day one. PHS fans leave at halftime if they are behind by more than 10 points and then go home and write a letter to the editor demanding the coach be fired. That's why South will be producing champions for the next couple of generations while PHS won't even be in the playoffs no matter how elegant their facilities may be.
