Thumbs UP: For our law officials recognizing our Constitutional Rights.

Thumbs Down: For the Local News failing to recognize that we have not had a vast majority of the problems that the rest of the country faces with our current way of life and recognition of self preservation and personal protection.

What one would expect, Liberal Press. And they wonder why circulation is falling.

Thank you Ken for showing the guts to stand by your oath to uphold the Constitution. Mr. Editor, you call 911 when seconds count, I will call my neighbors, they are here and they have guns. All of Parkersburg is not in the Historical District. Mr. Editor, you have been here a while but you do not know us very well. To follow your choice of hand gestures, double thumbs down to you although in this particular case I would not have chosen that one.

Terms of service to sign up for comments. Include Abusive, hateful, poor taste, attack of a personal nature, These have all been taken in the comments from your paper. Sorry you must continue to attack the 2 commissioners that are trying to do there job. They are honest law abbiding, tax paying citizens. Unlike others. I think the Assessor needs to do his job. And you and Pamela needs to get a life and this paper needs to quit attacking people personally. Your comments do not adhear to you Terms of Service. Also you need to get a good proof reader for your paper.Shame on You.

I agree! What Merritt is attempting is called "nullification - when a state of local official disregards or flouts existing federal law. It didn't work out so well in the 1960s when officials like George Wallace or Lester Maddox used "nullification" and "interposition" it to oppose civil-rights laws. I won't work out in Wood County, W.Va. in 2013 either! Is the Sheriff one of the "Promise-Keepers" - extremist officials (i.e. Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio) in several states who have signed a "Grover Norquist"-style "pledge" to oppose federal statutes? ... I thought these issues were settled by that 1861-65 war?

Oops! I meant to say "It won't work" in Wood County either! I have both worked and worked-out in Wood County. Like many others, I wasn't paying much attention to this issue, but - after the Newtown abomination and incidents like the one now happening in Alabama - now I am! I have two seven-year-old grandchildren & these events have upset me so much that I might slip up on wording these comments! ... Has it occurred to any of the previous commentors that Editor Smith's words on this sensitive topic are neither "liberal" nor conservative", but purely "common-sense"? Too bad that there's not more of that rare commodity around these parts!

Also check ot the 1934 Firearms Act and the 1939 "United States v. Miller" SCOTUS ruling that banned the use of Tommyguns and sawed-off shotguns in the wake of gangster doings like the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" ... "Happy t. Valentine's Day" to all gun-lovers out there who don't want to accept responsibility for obeying the laws!

Iraq war hero Chris Kyle ("American Sniper"), who killed more Iraqi insurgents than any other serviceperson, was murdered today at a shooting-range near Fort Worth, Texas by another vet who was possibly suffering from PTSD ... I have no further comment, except to say that it's ironic that a hero like Kyle - who survived multiple attempts by the enemy to kill him in Iraq - was murdered here in the USA! ... The President's proposals include 1. instituting universal background checks for all firearm purchases, 2. make it a federal offense to traffick in illegal firearms, and 3. to make providing criminals or mentally-unstable persons with firearms a federal felony offense ... Will the local (?) "experts on Constitutional law" please tell us how any of these suggestions are "unConstitutional"? And don't use quotes from Drudge, Limbaugh, Hannity, Glenn Beck, or Wayne LaPierre to do it!

No sherriff in West Virginia will not have to worry about whether they are going to uphold a law if one is passed or not as it will not stand up to Constitutional muster if it bans weapons. Heller and McDonld have affirmed that the 2nd Amendment does in fact grant the right to bear arms to citizens.

A few days ago, there was a Poll question on whether sheriffs should enforce a Federal gun ban. I can't find it now. Does the Search box not work for old Polls -- or was that Poll removed from the site?
