Ghost Hunting

We will have a guest blogger this week as I didn't do anything fun or find anything worth chattering about. Sharon Coleman, my friend and colleague, spent last weekend with The Ghost Hunters from the Sci-Fi Channel. This is a bit of my fan side coming out: I was and still am jealous. At least she got my press kit for season 4 signed! Here is her account along with some photos: My sister and I went to Philadelphia to meet the Ghost Hunters from Sci-Fi at Fort Mifflin and had a blast. We left about 6 a.m. on Friday and drove through West Virginia, Maryland, Deleware, and Pennsylvania to get there. We got stuck in traffic on I -95 and finally got to the hotel around 2 p.m. We checked in and drove around to park and unload. After settling in in the room, we went to the lobby to wait for the meet and greet to start. We saw Dave Tango arrive through the front doors and his dad was running around the lobby for while.

Goodbye 600 Starbucks

Starbucks has announced it will be closing 600 stores and cutting 7 percent of the workforce, about 12,000 full-time and part-time jobs. I'm not surprised. Starbucks has been advertising recently - they have basically never advertised before because they have not needed too. Word of mouth got them enough business to expand. While I have never been in favor of purchasing $4 cups of coffee daily, many people disagreed with me. Until gasoline became $4 a gallon. I think that $4 morning indulgence is only the first thing people are going to cut out of the daily budget.

Lets take care of ourselves first

Associated Press ran a story that said some ideas to offset high gasoline prices may not work in West Virginia, such as public transportation in a largely rural state like ours. I can't say this in a respectful way, so I'll just say it. I'm not worried about problems in the rural areas because I live in the city, and just because something won't work in the country, doesn't mean we have to suffer in the city. If expanding Easy Rider in Parkersburg and Vienna with more routes and buses increases ridership and makes the system more useable so we use less gasoline, then lets do it and not worry about someone who lives 20 miles out of town.

June is the official start of summer, so I'm kicking off the season with a new book a week that you should be sticking in a beach bag to take on vacation, or just relaxing with in the backyard along with a glass of sweet tea. This week's is a teen romance offering. Be sure to check back every Monday for a new book for adults or teenagers! A summer away from home gives a teen a new look on life and love in "The Other Boy" by Hailey Abbott. Maddy Sinclaire was looking forward to a summer free from her parents and sleeping until noon and then hanging out with her best friends at the beach and her boyfriend. When she throws a blowout party the moment her parents leave, she is caught when they come back home for something. Maddy finds herself in hot water and now spending the summer working on her parents' vineyard in Napa Valley. Maddy isn't the only teen indentured to be there.

Call me a skeptic

Do you believe the story of Dana Torres? Torres is a 41-year-old Olympic swimmer who qualified for both the Olympics' 50 and 100-meter freestyle events. She announced she would not compete in the 100-meter event, instead choosing to focus solely on the 50-meter event, where she established a new American record in the trials. In addition to being 41-years-old, Torres, who has been retired since 2000 ä her second attempt at retirement, has undergone two surgeries (shoulder and knee) in the last year. And she gave birth two years ago. Torres, who first competed at the 1984 Olympics, didn't just become the oldest American swimmer to ever qualify for the Olympics, she set a record at the trials, beating athletes half her age! Torres isn't unheralded. She owns nine Olympic medals, including five (two golds and three bronze) from the 2000 Sydney Olympics. This is the kind of story that's a dream come true. A fairy tale. It seems to good to be true.

Your rights as an American

I read my children an interesting bedtime story this week, the Bill of Rights. My seven-year-old daughter, Audrey, has developed an unwarranted fear of police, despite the fact there's police in the family – my uncle Bill Lazell was Parkersburg police chief back in the Sixties and also served as chief detective. I tried explaining that to Audrey. It didn't help. What helped, albeit slightly, was explaining to her that she has rights as an American. In America, these rights are seen not as a gift, but as something man can neither take away or give. These rights are inalienable. They are self-evident. They are the core of the American spirit and consciousness. You have a right to speak what you wish. You have a right to worship as you wish. You have the right to own a firearm to defend your life and property. Among the rights I find especially interesting are the last two of the Bill of Rights. They say people have even more rights than the ones we mentioned.

Tags make pages easier to find

Nearly every person on the planet has now used a search engine. For most that means they go to Google and type in a few key words and what they are looking for pops up. The magic behind returning exactly what you are looking for has made Google billions and has spawned the new "science" of search engine optimization. If you operate a Web site you try very hard to supply the search engine what it wants. Google uses some 200 factors when rating sites, exactly how they use them remains a trade secret. Tons of books, articles, and web pages have been written to offer tips on how to make pages more search engine friendly. It boils down though, to having good content and then letting the search engines index the site. A good web site helps this task out by having special tags on a site.

We knew it was coming

We knew it was coming and the so-called "practice" period begins July 26. West Virginians will have seven months to "practice" dialing the 10-digit telephone number of friends, businesses, government offices, etc., before they MUST add the area code to every telephone number in the state. For all of us who currently have the long-held 304 area code that was the only one in the state since area codes began, we will keep our old standby area code. Those getting new telephones beginning March 28 will have the new 681 area code. Beginning Feb. 28, all telephone calls will have to begin with the area code. OK, I don't like it either. It means if I want to call Charlie across the street or Jim next door I have to dial the area code and then their telephone number. That seems like a waste of effort and will cause confusion if I want to call a new business down the street and have to remember if it opened before or after March 28.
