Eat Your Feelings by Heather Whaley

Part humor book and part cookbook is Heather Whaley’s “Eat Your Feelings: Recipes for Self-Loathing.”

A book for when you’re tired of regular cookbooks, when you want a laugh, or when your life sucks or some combination of all three, “Eat Your Feelings: Recipes for Self-Loathing” is all about certain “moments” in your life (or someone else’s) when life’s unfortunate circumstances and depression get to be too much and you just want to eat something comforting instead of dealing with it. Whaley humorously describes the book in her introduction as”your very own support group to remind you that you’re not alone.”

The “recipes” all come with instructions and ingredients, accompanied by some sort of humorous picture, and randomly dashed in humor.

There’s “Hamburg Casserole for When Nobody Loves You and Never Will,” “Drunk and Disorderly Donut Pudding,” “Baby Won’t Stop Crying Nachos Supreme,” as just as a few examples. But then there’s every day embarrassments too, like “You Walked All the Way to Your Office without Realizing Your Skirt Was Tucked into Your Underpants Sesame Chicken,”

“You Farted Loudly in the Elevator Green Curry Chicken,” and even “Nobody Thinks You Are Funny Orange-Glazed Pork Chops.”

At the end of the book, there is a list of places to eat your feelings, some books to read while eating your feelings, some people with whom to eat your feelings (and in rhyming format!), some music to listen to while eating your feelings (and what not to listen to!) and some things to avoid while eating your feelings. And there are blank pages for you to presumably add your own lists too.

Even if you’ve never experienced the situation the recipe talks about (and with a lot of them, let’s hope not!), they are guaranteed to make you laugh no matter what, and possibly cook something too! And during the drab days of winter, who couldn’t use a good laugh or two?
