Bad kitty! – Viral video spotlights mascot gone wild
September 23, 2010 - Art Smith
Being an alumnus of Ohio University has never been easy when it comes cheering on the football team. I’ve spent the last few decades hearing how great the other OHIO school is when it comes to the gridiron.
When I was a student there, most students would stay to watch the band play at half-time and then clear out of the stadium.
Last weekend another member of the field crew made news when Ohio journeyed to Columbus to get beaten by Ohio State.
The game ended as expected when the nationally ranked Buckeyes beat the Bobcats.
It’s what happened before the game that has people talking though.
Rufus, the Bobcat, attacked and took down Brutus Buckeye, the Ohio State mascot that has a giant nut for a head.
Rufus of course is named after Rufus Putnam, the pioneer that helped to settle Marietta.
After Saturday’s game though, no one is claiming him, or the person in the suit, Brandon Hanning.
Most cameras these day, most phones for that matter, have built in video cameras.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that a video of the attack was uploaded to YouTube and has become an Internet sensation. The video has quickly “gone viral” which simply means a lot of people have looked for it and played it. As of Thursday night more than 1,000,000 people have viewed it. To put it in perspective. That is 10 times the number of people that watched the game in person at Ohio Stadium.
Behave badly in front of 100,000 people and someone undoubtly will have a video of it posted to the Internet within minutes.
