Glad to be back!!!!
October 1, 2013 - Jim Smith
As the self-sacrificing pilot in the "Independence Day" film said as he flew his fighter jet into the primary weapon of the alien ship, "I'm baaaaccccckkkkkkk!"
A month after having a quadruple bypass, a heart valve replacement, a pacemaker and more than a liter of fluid drained from around my left lung, I'm back at the office doing what I love.
And, yes, before anyone asks, I had the surgery done here in Parkersburg and could not have been more pleased with the cardiologist, the surgeon or the care I received at the St. Joseph campus of Camden Clark Medical Center. The nurses and support personnel in the cardiac care intensive care unit were superb in taking care of me and making sure I was on the road to recovery as rapidly as possible. And, I cannot forget the rehabilitation people who made sure I was strong enough to go home less than a week after the surgery and was able to climb the six steps between the first floor and second floor of my home.
All in all, the experience was not one I want to repeat anytime soon, but the worst part of it was not the surgery, the rehabilitation , the hospital stay or being bored out of my limited mind at home for three weeks (thank goodness for the Discovery and the History channels), it was awakening from surgery with that blasted ventilator shoved down my throat, which was what I feared most before the surgery and was right to do so. Thankfully a male nurse saved me from trying to pull it out and/or gag on it by calming me down and repeatedly getting me to relax until that devil tube could be removed.
For a month, I was on the outside of the newsroom looking in, which hasn't been the case for me in more than 40 years ... and I didn't like it.
But now I'm back and couldn't be happier! I also couldn't be more pleased with the way the newsroom staff handled things while I was gone. They are a great group!
