Crimes and accidents top 2011 most read stories on NewsandSentinel.com

p>Around this time of year there are always a lot of lists about what the top stories of the last year were.

Either editors or surveys normally chose those lists. I prefer to view lists generated by raw numbers. In this case the number of page views stories got on NewsandSentinel.com.

First of all there were a lot of page views in 2011. 14,997,585 to be exact. That’s a lot of reading. All of the traffic was not to stories. The home page for instance was viewed 3.8 million times; the page that lists all the obituaries was viewed more than 1.7 million times.

Accidents and crime stories are general the most read stories on any news site including this one. Most of the stories on this list fall into one of these two story types.

Here are the top read stories on NewsandSentinel.com in 2011.

A lot of things that didn't make the top 10 because they are not stories still had a remarkable number of views. The crossword puzzle for instance was viewed more than 20,000 times, historical front pages from the News and Sentinel had more than 10,000 views. The most read blog on the site in 2011 was one by Jim Smith about Nancy Grace that had more than 4,000 views.

Our reader forums had a stunning 168,707 views in 2011, the pages display reader comments to stories displayed 583,948 times, both showing the reader’s voice is heard load and clear.
